Release Date, Reveal Trailer, Cover Athlete & more

MLB The Show 22 is already creeping into the conversation, even as MLB The Show 21 stands strong with new content like roster updates or Conquest maps.

With an eye towards the future, here’s everything we know so far about MLB The Show 22, including the release date and when we expect to learn more.

MLB The Show 22 Release Date

As of right now, the expected MLB The Show 22 release date is Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

While unconfirmed, this timing makes the most sense considering last year’s release date, and isn’t far off from the timing used in previous years.

While MLB The Show 19, 18, and 20 all released in late March just before MLB Opening Day, we saw a shift with MLB The Show 21 as it landed in the third week of April.

That allowed the hype of MLB Opening Day to pass prior to release and build anticipation for launch, which is a strategy that worked very well and seems likely to continue with MLB The Show 22.

Trailer, Platforms, Price, and Editions

The first news for MLB The Show 21 arrived on February 1, 2021 when the announcement and cover athlete trailer featuring Fernando Tatis Jr. was dropped.

We could see a similar reveal for MLB The Show 22, and the title’s significant success on Xbox means it’s likely we’ll see things back on the same platforms as MLB The Show 21.

It’s likely that the series will stay on both next gen and current gen for at least one more cycle, so we expect it to drop on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a sliver of a chance they finally do a PC release.

Price should remain the same, with a $60 cost on current gen, $70 on next gen, and a little more for any special editions they choose to release for MLB The Show 22.

Cover Athlete Predictions

Last year we saw Sony San Diego choose the youngest cover athlete in series history by going with Fernando Tatis Jr., and it was a move that really set the tone for the game’s build to launch.

The most obvious pick for MLB The Show 22 is the undeniable biggest star in baseball today: Shohei Ohtani.

SHOWTIME: Next year could put Ohtani center stage

We could also see a long-term living legend chosen like Jacob deGrom, or another fast rising young star like Wander Franco get the nod as cover star.

New Features

We saw several major features debut with MLB The Show 21, including the new Pinpoint Pitching system and additions like Stadium Creator.

We expect all of these recent additions to be further refined for MLB The Show 22, but word that things like Stadium Creator were years in the making could signal they already have plans for something that didn’t quite make the cut for MLB The Show 21.

They also broke new ground with crossplay in MLB The Show 21, and hopefully we’ll see more strides made as MLB The Show 22 continues to set the tone for sports gaming each year.
