Early this month, a modder managed to create a GTA Online loading fix, cutting its length down by about 70%. Speaking to PC Gamer, Rockstar Games actually took note of this issue and has confirmed that this fan-made fix will become an official patch in a forthcoming update. The company did not provide any detail on when the update supposed to be launched and whether or not it will also affect the console releases. The GTA Online modder, known as T0ST, also added that they were awarded $10,000 for their effort.
This is definitely a piece of good news for GTA Online players out there. For years, the game’s appalling loading times have been made into a running joke in the community ever since the game debuted for PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. Although other non-technical issues are still plaguing the game (like cheats, lack of single-player updates, aggressive Shark Cards offerings, Oppressor, to name a few), at least it will start much faster now.
As we reported earlier, a programmer and GTA Online player known as T0ST saw a programming flaw in the game code. Using external applications, they found out that every time you launch GTA Online, the game scans a 10MB JSON text file containing a list of 63,000 in-game items to check for discrepancies. And it kept doing it 1,984,531,500 times, causing a bottleneck in your CPU.
Eventually, ToST managed to isolate the problematic lines of code and reduce their game’s load time from six minutes to a whopping one minute 50 seconds. Making their GTA Online‘s loading time 70% faster. If you want to check out T0ST’s codes yourself, simply go to their GitHub page. However, if you do want to try it out, the fix works by injecting a DLL code. For that reason, the game might flag it as a “cheat” and accidentally ban your account. Might be safer to just wait for the official patch.
