A recent mod for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim now makes it possible to swap out sword fighting and magic for a cushy office job. While there are plenty of games out there based on real life jobs, including one that’s literally called Job Simulator, the opportunity to ignore dragon-slaying and dangerous questing in general in favor of the mundanity of the standard 9-5 is now a reality in Bethesda’s 2011 epic.
While there’s not a lot of realism within the standard game, there are some mods for Skyrim that add more realistic features, such as adding diverse weather and climate conditions or being able to collect water from wells. However, these pertain to the general gameplay that most players experience, especially when it comes to high-octane action. But for those who want to put the brakes on in the world of Tamriel and do the complete opposite of all this heroism can now do so thanks to this fan-made add-on.
As seen by PCGamesN, a user who goes by Kp40az has uploaded a mod for Skyrim simply called “9 to 5 Office Job.” Doing exactly what it says on the tin, the Dragonborn can choose to hang up their sword and shield and punch in to a desk job every day instead. Created to give a sense of being at work in the real world, the modification comes with a number of features, such as salary and performance systems, with the latter giving players the ability to ask for raises depending on how well they do. There’s also a mini-game to help pass the time between the allotted hours. The job itself can be found inside Whiterun’s Drunken Huntsman Inn, though players will not be able to access the office on Saturday and Sunday.
As one of the most immersive open world games available, Skyrim affords the chance to live the fantasy of a highly skilled warrior, thief, mage, or myriad other types of role-playing vocations. Seldom would many fans think to swap out adventuring for a desk job, but the beauty of the modding community is that it’s always coming up with interesting, or intentionally pedestrian, ideas.
Modders have had over a decade to improve on Skyrim‘s formula, and it’s looking like there will be more years of custom content to come. With The Elder Scrolls 6 allegedly still in pre-production, it’s likely going to be a while before the follow-up will see the light of day. In the meantime, at least players can while away the days with an admin position.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
