Smash reveals always get players hyped for the next character to come to the celebration of gaming. With the first Fighter Pass there was something for everyone, from Joker for Persona 5 fans, to Banjo and Kazooie for long-time fans of the company. Even Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame saw his time in the spotlight with the hero from Dragon Quest getting added, and fighting game players also got another bone tossed to them with the reveal of Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury.
Fighter Pass 2 was considered a mixed bag of characters, with players who purchased it getting their hand on five out of the six new characters for the game. Min Min from arms got her debut as a fighter, the internet was short-circuited when it was announced that Steve & Alex from Minecraft would become characters in the game, and Final Fantasy got another rep in the form of Sepiroth. Most recently, fighting game fans won once again with the introduction of the character Kazuya from Tekken.
However, there’s one more character left in the game at this point, and many players wonder who will take the place as the final character for Smash Ultimate. Fans are hoping for a bombshell character, as the previous fighter pass ended with the character Byleth from Fire Emblem 3 Houses, which the fanbase considered to be a bad choice. Many players are expecting Crash Bandicoot to make his way into the game, while others are expecting Rayman to finally get his time to shine as a character. Some fans are holding out hope for picks like Doom Slayer, Master Chief, or even the Heavy Weapons Guy from Team Fortress 2. But during the showcase for Kazuya, Sakurai revealed some new Mii costumes, which debunked some of the Smash community’s hopes for characters to appear in the game.
Mii costumes are considered to be a final say in what character is not going to be in Smash, as Mii costumes are shown in the final moments of the showcase trailer for characters. Some unexpected arrivals have come through with the Mii costumes, however, as characters like Cuphead, and Sans from Undertale made their debut into the game with a rendition of a music track from their respective titles. This is no different from some of the characters seen in the trailer for the 10th set of costumes.
A fan-favorite option found among most RPG fans, Lloyd Irving is the main protagonist from Tales of Symphonia, a story RPG with battle mechanics that are more expansive than the typical turn-based RPG. The character is a fan favorite among its die-hard fans and has been asked for since the release of Smash for Wii U and 3DS. However, Lloyd found himself getting the same treatment he received in Ultimate, being reconciled in a Mii Costume in the previous iteration of the fighting game.
It’s no surprise that Bethesda got another rep in the game. While not a fully-fledged character and still a Mii Costume, Nintendo added the Vault Boy From Fallout in the game as a Mii Gunner. The trailer also shows off the character being thrown from Kappn’s bus, which is a sly reference to the “You’re Finally Awake” meme, which is the opening of Skyrim. The Dragonborn is also a Mii Sword Fighter, letting players take down their enemies as the hero of Skyrim.
A character that a lot of fans were asking for, now reduced to a Mii Costume. The Son of Sparda himself, Dante, is now in Smash Brothers. Sporting his look from the first Devil May Cry game, Dante takes the role of the Mii Sword Fighter and is shown in the trailer performing a move that looks like his iconic stinger from the game. However, it seems like Dante is going to be sitting out Smash Ultimate as a full-fledged character.
Another platformer rep that players were hoping for, Wayforward’s Shante is coming to the game as a Mii Brawler character. The half-genie may not be able to do any special tricks or turn into any creatures to aid her in the battle, but she does come with a special music track from one of her titles, showing that Shante is receiving some extra love in the game, the same way that Cuphead and Sans did.
While these four characters being Mii costumes, there’s still one Smash fighter left in the pass. With Sakurai has stated that this will be the last character for Smash Ultimate, time will tell what that character will be.
