Soccer Heads To Colorado For Pair Of Games This Week

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Just like the 2019 season, the Western Oregon University soccer team will begin the 2021 season back in Colorado. In 2019, the Wolves faced Western Colorado and Adams State. This time around, WOU will face Western Colorado once again and Colorado Mesa. Both games will be played at the home of Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction. WOU will face Western Colorado on Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific and Colorado Mesa on Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific.

WOU began the Kacey Bingham era in style in 2019 with a dominating 6-0 victory over Western Colorado. That game was played in Alamosa, as the Wolves then turned around and played Adams State a few days later. The Wolves came out in the first half on fire scoring four goals over the first 20 minutes against the Mountaineers. WOU ended up taking 14 shots, with nine landing on goal, they held Western Colorado to just one shot that didn’t register on goal.

That meeting was the first and only between the two schools. The matchup with Colorado Mesa will be the first meeting between the teams.

WOU is coming off of three exhibition contests so far this season and will play four non-conference games, with the next two coming at home against Sonoma State and Humboldt State. The Wolves open the GNAC portion of the schedule on the road towards the end of September at Saint Martin’s on Sep. 23.

During the 2021 spring season, Camille Darland, Piper Matson and Alyssa Tomasini all led the team in goals with one in the countable eight games. Four goalies saw time in net, with Morgan Mihelich playing in four games and had a win with 11 saves. Emily Wheeler played in four games and tallied 22 saves.

Going back to the 2019 season, Tomasini led the team in points with 25, collecting nine goals. Current assistant coach Isabelle Creighton and Selene Konyn added 14 points apiece, with Creighton tallying four goals and Konyn with five. Alex Qualls started 19 games in goal, tallying 10 wins, six shutouts, one combined shutout and 57 saves.

Of the 19 freshmen on this year’s roster, eight saw time during the shortened 2021 spring season.

Western Colorado went 1-8 during the spring season with Jessie Jacobsen leading the team with four points and a team-high two goals. In net, Kaeyla Noble and Grace Walker each saw time, with Noble picking up the win.

To close the trip, WOU will face Colorado Mesa on Sunday. The Mavericks went 5-4-1 in the 2021 spring season, with Lila Dere leading the offense with 14 points on seven goals. Lexi Newton added eight points. In goal, both Chloe Dody and Emily Signorio saw time, with Signorio collecting three wins and 20 saves.
