Sony has sold 2 million PS5s in the UK

Nearly two years on from its initial launch, PlayStation 5 consoles are still hard to find, with most retailers selling out new stock as quickly as it arrives. Though still plagued by supply issues due to global circumstances, Sony has managed to sell more than 2 million PS5 consoles in the UK alone.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz and GfK, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has surpassed over 2 million units sold in the UK, making it the fourth fastest-selling games console of all time, only behind the PS4 (No.3), the PS2 (No.2) and Nintendo Wii (No.1).

That being said, the PS5’s 2 million units represent a bigger success for Sony than other systems due to the price of the console meaning that the 2 million sales generated £919 million in revenue. For comparison’s sake, the Nintendo Wii’s 2 million sales amounted to ‘just’ £358 million, with the previous record holder being the Xbox One with £726 million at 2m units sold.

Speaking on this success, GfK’s Dorian Bloch said “Given the stock problems surrounding PS5 it is fair to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2m units. One thing that is clear, the significantly higher price of PS5 has not hindered sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium that is shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2m unit period. PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units.”

As impressive as the PS5’s success has been so far, it would have been interesting to see just how well the console performs when not limited by major stock and component shortages.
