Sony appears to be all-in on plans to expand its portfolio beyond big-budget single player experiences as the Japanese company confirms it has 10 live service games in the works. They are all planned to release by March 2026. The news comes from the firm’s latest earnings call, where it also touched on the recent Bungie acquisition.
Supporting comments made by bosses Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst, chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki spoke of how PlayStation Studios will learn from Bungie. Transcribed by VGC, Totoki said: “Our studios will learn from Bungie, that is a strong wish we have the Bungie side is willing to work closely with us.” A new Bungie IP was also mentioned during the earnings call, which was initially aided by a $100 million injection of cash from Chinese company NetEase back in 2018. The project in question will remain multi-platform.
It’s clear Destiny developer Bungie will play a large role in bringing these 10 live service titles to market in the next couple of years, but we’ve only heard word of a few of them. Naughty Dog has its multiplayer adaptation of The Last of Us, and the upcoming Twisted Metal reboot is expected to fit this mould. As we first reported last month, development of Sweet Tooth’s return has switched from Lucid Games to the recently acquired Firesprite Games. A few of Sony’s collaborations with external studios are also expected to be live service. Beyond those, however, it’s anyone’s guess what the others could be.
The live service model appears to be important to Sony going forward, with Jim Ryan recently explaining how Bungie will aid the push. “This is a strategic step towards continuing to evolve the gaming experiences that we build. Bungie’s expertise in delivering a world-class service approach and long-term community engagement is extremely compelling and will support the development of several future live services titles from PlayStation Studios.”
