Special Olympics Summer Games set | News, Sports, Jobs


NORRISTOWN — Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s 53rd annual Summer Games, the organization’s largest statewide competition, will host nearly 750 coaches, 1,500 athletes and Unified Partners representing 38 Special SOPA programs from Thursday through Saturday at Penn State University.

More than 1,000 volunteers will be onsite throughout the weekend. It is the first time SOPA’s Summer Games competition will be held in-person since the onset of the pandemic.

The Games will commence at Penn State University with Opening Ceremonies in the Pegula Ice Arena.

Throughout the weekend, SOPA athletes will be participating in, athletics, basketball, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming and tennis competitions.

Swaim earns MVP

HARRISBURG — The West defeated the East, 49-14, last weekend in the small school PSFCA small-schools East-West Game at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium.

Bedford’s Mercury Swaim was the MVP and ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more. He finished 13-for-20 with 253 yards passing and rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries.

Conemaugh Valley’s Logan Kent and Bald Eagle Area’s Garrett Burns each ran for touchdowns for the West. Windber’s Keith Charney and Richland’s Griffin Larue caught touchdown passes. Clearfield’s Karson Kline had three catches for 64 yards.

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic’s Deven Wyandt had a 44-yard punt for the West.

Central’s Josh Waite had four tackles, and Bellwood-Antis’ Sean Mallon had three tackles.

Lady Vikings picked

FLINTON — Glendale’s Alyson Buterbaugh, Riley Best and Madison Peterson were selected to the Moshannon Valley League Softball All-Star Team.

Others selected were Moshannon Valley’s Makenzie Daniels and Abby Gilson, West Branch’s Greysyn Gable and Madison Nelson, and Curwensville’s Joslynne Freyer and Makenzie Wall.

ICC stars named

SAXTON — Claysburg-Kimmel’s Pressten Imler was picked as a first-team outfielder for the Inter-County Conference South All-Star Team in baseball.

C-K’s Dante Francona was an honorable mention pick as a designated player.

Northern Bedford County’s Eion Snider (outfielder) and Brooks Snider (infielder) were honorable mention selections.
