To cement Splatoon 3‘s remarkable success in Japan after its launch on September 9th, it’s been confirmed that the title sold 2.7 million boxed copies last month, making up nearly 70% of all physical games in the country.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Splatoon 3 topped the top ten charts for the month of September, speeding ahead of the competition for a more-than-comfortable lead. It even outsold the combined sales of Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline on Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, all of which entered the top ten.

Nintendo itself previously confirmed that Splatoon 3 had become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch title in Japan, having sold a total of 3.45 million units in just three days across physical and digital formats. The game also topped the UK charts for several weeks since its launch until EA’s FIFA 23 finally knocked it down a peg last week.

Here’s a look at the top ten charts for the month of September in Japan:

  1. Splatoon 3 (Switch | Nintendo)
  2. Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline (Switch | Square Enix)
  3. Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline (PS4 | Square Enix)
  4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch | Nintendo)
  5. Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch | Nintendo)
  6. Minecraft: Switch Edition (Switch | Nintendo)
  7. Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline (PS5 | Square Enix)
  8. Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival (Switch | Bandai Namco)
  9. Earth Defence Force 6 (PS4 | D3 Publisher)
  10. Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch | Nintendo)

It’s not all good news to come out of Japan, however: it was recently discovered that a streaming group was projecting adult content into Splatoon 3 matches using a technique called chroma key. Nintendo’s corporate Twitter account subsequently sent out a reminder of its policies regarding streaming content online.
