It feels like only yesterday that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched. In fact, the 9th-gen devices will soon be entering their third year on the market. Despite the high demand and low supply of consoles, both manufacturers have seemingly not been resting, with mid-gen upgrades for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S said to be already in the hands of developers.
Tez2, a known dataminer and insider – primarily for Rockstar Games – recently took to the GTA forums claiming that “Most AAA studios should have received the dev kits of mid-life upgrades or should receive them by the start of new year.”
When asked to clarify whether this claim was stated as fact or merely a prediction, Tez2 doubled down, claiming it to be “for sure” true.
The concept of a mid-gen upgrade was first seen during the PS4 and Xbox One generation, with both systems seeing ‘Pro’ consoles release with 4K support, increased GPU performance and more.
Unlike the PS4 generation however (which was plagued by underpowered and outdated console hardware even at the systems’ launch), the PS5 and Xbox Series X have yet to have their full potential tapped, and so the idea of an even more powerful console being on its way is a curious one, especially as both Sony and Microsoft are struggling to produce enough of the base models.
Of course, adding a Pro version would not take away from the base PS5 and Xbox Series X, and so their existence is harmless. Still, its necessity is questionable, and so it will be interesting to see how Sony and Microsoft market these devices – assuming they are indeed real.
