Following the news over TAMIU’s esports teams’ development and future, the university’s JV Call of Duty team triumphed on Sunday against Canada’s University of Windsor in Ontario in a 3-0 win. This officially puts them in the grand finals that is set to be played on Dec. 12 at 1 p.m.
The team made up of members with the gamertags Iso, Zeal, Buddha, DLoading and Dudz will once against face off against Minnesota State University, Mankato. MNSU’s win against TAMIU put the local team in the lower bracket on Saturday, where TAMIU had one last chance to return in the lower finals.
The JV and varsity teams’ matches can be rewatched on the TAMIU Recreational Sports Twitch channel, twitch.tv/tamiurecsports. It will also be the stream to watch on Dec. 12.
According to Ivan Cano, TAMIU Rec Specialist, the JV team was originally meant to be the university’s second varsity team. Following the next seasons that happen each school semester, more teams are expected to participate in their respective National Association of Collegiate esports game tournaments.
According to the NACE, the Starleague is the largest collegiate esports league in North America with more than 14,500 students from 600 colleges and universities. Being in its position, the Starleague is stated to provide students scholarship prizing and live grand finals events at the end of each semester after a highly competitive season.
This Fall semester, the TAMIU Call of Duty varsity team faced off alongside the JV team for their first national NACE tournament participation. While the varsity team’s efforts were unable to reach the grand finals, the fledgling team reached fourth place against experienced teams from across the North America.
