Another summer month is nearly behind us. Thank goodness, because the never-ending flood of depressing headlines gets old. At least video games can take our minds off everything, if only for a brief moment in time.
In a nice change of pace from last week, the games industry was booming with massive stories. Release date information for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide came out of nowhere — proving that green orcs punching each other is still a valid business venture for developers. Please, tabletop connoisseurs, don’t get upset at us for mentioning those two franchises in the same sentence. Let’s all just collectively groan that Lord of the Rings: Gollum was delayed again.
Alright, enough lollygagging. Time to look at the most prominent video game-related headlines from this week.
Ok, let’s rip off this band aid straight away: Aspyr’s remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) isn’t coming out anytime soon. It’s been delayed indefinitely, even. The rumor mill went wild with this one, but apparently, management at Aspyr wasn’t happy with how things were progressing and fired two key director’s behind the project. Initially slated for this fall, the game probably won’t release until 2025 — big ouch.
This one is weird. Jurassic World, the multimillion-dollar dinosaur film franchise, was originally a video game pitch. Seamus Blackley, best known for creating the original Xbox, was working with Steven Spielberg on a Jurassic Park franchise revival many years ago. Specifically, a game called Jurassic World. Unfortunately, due to studio shakeups, all projects associated with that relaunched were canned. Blackley then sent everything to some producers that would go on to make the actual Jurassic World film.
Please take all of what you’re about to read with a grain of salt. GTA 6 is in development and may have a playable Latina as one of the leads. The story seemingly takes cues from Bonnie and Clyde’s real-world exploits too. Pretty cool idea, huh? Some folks are not into it, but they need to relax. We don’t even know if any of this will make it to the final product!
The iconic ‘oof’ sound effect from Roblox is long gone, and fans absolutely hate it. It turns out the audio is actually from an old first-person shooter called Messiah. Roblox Corporation allegedly doesn’t want to pay for the licensing fees, so ‘oof’ as we know it is no more. Farewell, old friend.
There’s probably not been a community-driven story this cool in years. Two months ago, someone posted on Reddit about finding a secret church in Nier: Automata that nobody had seen before. Over the past week, they slowly revealed video proving the location was real. Well, sort of, the grand revelation was that it was a labor of love by three modders. Talk about pulling a good old-fashioned bamboozle. Fans went ballistic in more ways than one. The whole saga is hard to do justice in a brief summary, but know that stuff like this rarely happens.
Look, Final Fantasy 14 has excellent characters. Many believe it has some of the best in video game history (me). Well, one old villain from the game is returning, and he’s hot now. Post your Squidward memes here — fans certainly did. There’s nothing else to this story than everyone loves a fictional bad guy. Like, really.
Well, that does it for gaming news for this week. Until next time, folks!
