Everyone give Rick your spirit energy
The Evolution Championship series is returning to its offline major status after 2 years, and while many fighting game fans were pleased with the picks for 2022’s lineup, those with a deep love for Marvel vs. Capcom were seemingly left with nothing.
That may not quite be the case after all, however, as there’s currently work going on behind the scenes to get Marvel vs. Capcom 2 back on the mainstage for Evo 2022.
Shortly after the lineup reveal stream last night, new Evo General Manager Rick ‘TheHadou’ Thiher to address fans’ disappointment at no MvC being shown.
“For those immediately asking, we have not forgot about MVC2,” wrote Thiher on Twitter. “So give us some time and keep that spirit bomb warmed up.”
It hasn’t been clarified what form the iconic crossover would / will take at Evo 2022, but the most likely answer is a revival of their original plans for 2020.

Before it was canceled, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was going to be featured for a special exhibition tournament to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary.
Instead of an open bracket, 4 previous Evo champions in PG|Justin Wong, IFC|YipeS, Santhrax and Ducvader / Duc Do were set to make up half of a top 8.
The other remaining spots were set to be earned through qualifying tournaments held at other majors like Combo Breaker with the final slot going to the winner of a Last Chance Qualifier the first day of Evo.
But of course 2020 happened and none of that came to pass.
That still leaves a handful of questions left in the air with the largest being why wasn’t this ready to go for the reveal announcement?
The most obvious potential roadblock slowing down progress in getting MvC2 back is working out the licensing between both Capcom and Disney / Marvel, but since they previously agreed on having it at Evo 2020, hopefully that won’t present much issue.
There very well also could be some logistical questions to work out with which players are going to attend along with working with potentially other majors to create new qualifying tournaments.
Without a modern re-release for MvC2 as well, it’ll be interesting to see which version of the game they’d play on between the Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 or original arcade hardware.
Some fans were also wondering if Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would be getting the nod this year to celebrate its 10-year anniversary that ocurred late last year, but it seems they’ve decided to make it up to MvC2 first.
While it will hopefully be great to see on the big stage again after all this time, it’s not too surprising to see Marvel 2 get the consideration, especially after the #FREEMVC2 campaign raising support for a new release for the beloved fighting game.
We shouldn’t go pushing our excitement too high though until this is all a done deal though it sounds pretty likely considering Evo is talking about it at all.
Evo 2022 is scheduled to take place August 5–7 in Las Vegas, Nevada with 9 titles announced for the mainstage being Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate, Tekken 7, The King of Fighters 15, Melty Blood: Type Lumina, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Skullgirls: 2nd Encore.
