The Last of Us is being remastered for the PS5 by series creator Naughty Dog. Codenamed T1X, it was earlier in development at Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group, a studio originally set up to assist the company’s bigger studios with shipping their games on time. However, during production Sony decided that rather than Visual Arts Service Group leading up development on The Last of Us for PS5 and Naughty Dog advising, it would have Naughty Dog lead up the project instead.
“To Sony, the move made sense. Naughty Dog is ‘one of the key studios’ for Sony’s ability to sell PlayStations, said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Matthew Kanterman. ‘Sony’s competitive advantage has always been exclusive content over Microsoft and more new games as well as remakes of classic titles from such a storied team can help sustain demand for PS5’,” reads a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
And while this may bode well for fans expecting a sense of consistency, it has come at a great cost. Most of the team at Visual Arts Service Group that originally worked on and led the project including founder Michael Mumbauer and game director David Hall. T1X aka The Last of Us for PS5 is still in the works at Naughty Dog with assistance from Sony’s Visual Arts Support Group.
All of this suggests that the PS5 may end up being Sony’s most conservative and safest console with few creative entries. If the focus is on mega-hits and remasters of past mega-hits, gamers are all poorer for it. This highlights the overarching issues at Sony such as shuttering Japan Studio, creator of Gravity Rush and Siren, due to a larger focus on blockbuster games rather than a more rounded catalogue that should have room for independent, quirky fare.
