The handheld PlayDate console may not be on the market yet, but it’s spawning some hype, and the latest live stream from console maker Panic shows that PlayDate isn’t a one-trick pony. I am.
Specifically, it will be a 4-trick pony. Panic team members unveiled a multi-faceted accessory for the PlayDate console. This is a stand that can be connected to a handheld to charge the battery, much like a wireless charging pad on a smartphone.
The stand also has stereo speakers that allow you to play PlayDate games at high volume and play music from a pre-installed “Summer Song” playlist called Poolsuitefm. Panic also states that the stand acts as a pen holder. There’s also an official PlayDate pen (the iconic yellow console) that you can plug in.
The stand is a fascinating addition to handheld game consoles, demonstrating that PlayDate has moved beyond the loose inspiration of Game Boy on the first game console to the realm of the best-selling Nintendo Switch.
Of course, the Nintendo Switch comes with a dock for charging and playing on your TV. PlayDate is not output to the TV via the dock, It can also be synchronized with a PC / Mac / Linux application and output to the computer screen in real time...
However, one of Switch’s trademark features is the kickstand. This allows the player to tilt the switch back and use it over short distances while using the Joy-Con controller. This is a kind of mini TV experience where you and your friends flock around the table. The PlayDate stand has a small stand underneath the colorful cube accessories that can be tilted at a small angle towards eye level.
