It’s a funny name to swallow, but it is the second generation of Sega’s answer to competing options like the Nintendo Classic. It is the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 console and it is dropping into select stores next month (October 27th) for a limited time. As with most “classic” consoles hitting the market with built-in games, it is a limited edition item and only so many will be made.
In the meantime, consumers in the UK have a chance to pre-order the new console and be one of the first to put their names on the list. It runs £104.99 (around $121 USD, although it is expected to be $99 in the US when it launches) and Sega announced that inventory will be less than the previous-gen model. So interested gamers will be scrambling to get their hands on one before they sell out forever (at least, until scalpers attempt to resell them online for a much higher price tag).
So what is the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2? Like all the other classic consoles to hit the market, it is a miniature edition of the original console packed full of games on-board. In fact, it has 60 titles (games) to choose from (we provided a list below) including Sega CD titles.
It comes with a single wired 6-button controller and a second controller can be purchased separately to expand to two players (can’t forget about those upsells). It also supports the controllers from the previous Sega Mega Drive.
Sadly, the mini consoles cannot play the original cartridge games as these are meant to be models (in shape/design) of the original consoles. Thus the slot for the cartridges is just for looks and would be too small to slide the original cartridges into. So you are limited to the games that are pre-loaded onto the console (or possibly expanded on if the company decides to offer additional digital game packages).
