The Xbox Series X fridge has been made into an item in Dirt 5 for custom map-making as a part of a new Game Pass Ultimate exclusive perk.
Dirt 5 is Codemasters’ off-road racing series, the last one to be released by the developers and publishers before being acquired by EA back in February. Unlike most racing games, Dirt 5 allows for a myriad of different environments and racing disciplines, including rallycross, ice racing, stadium monster truck racing, and off-road buggies. There are map locations from all around the world and a dynamic weather system with seasonal weather for each location. There is a four-player split-screen system for multiplayer and a fully flesh out narrative-driven career mode as well. Adding most to the game’s longevity and replayability, though, is the Playgrounds track editor mode.
The Xbox Series X fridge has reappeared in Dirt 5 in a recent update, which added the aptly titled Power Your Memes pack. This Xbox Game Pass Ultimate exclusive perk pack is filled to the brim with internet-based content additions for the off-road arcade racing game and is not limited to just refrigeration-based memes, but Microsoft’s Xbox Series X fridge gag is definitely a highlight.
Xbox Dirt 5 players were promised an exclusive treat on Wednesday by the Xbox Game Pass Twitter account, which tweeted an image of a huge Xbox Series X refrigerator in the game. The Playgrounds item is now available as part of the Windows 10 and Xbox Series X exclusive Power Your Memes pack (a play on Xbox’s “Power your dreams” slogan), a new exclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription perk . The pack includes three car skins along with the addition of the Xbox Series X fridge in the background of maps and for use in custom Playgrounds tracks, and its sheer size is as comical as the model is detailed.
The continuation of the Xbox Series X fridge saga is a true testament to the power of not just memes, but savvy Xbox marketing. Microsoft is doing a great job in riding this positive PR wave and letting fans enjoy the spoils. With Xbox Series X/S hardware revisions being an inevitability within the next few years, Dirt 5 likely won’t be the last game to get this kind of meme-centralized treatment courtesy of Xbox.
The Xbox X fridge meme was first conceived when the internet made the connection that the new generation console from Microsoft closely resembled a refrigerator, with it’s tall rectangular prism shape. Microsoft was quick to turn the insult into a lighthearted joke, reassuring fans that the Xbox Series X was in fact much smaller than a standard household fridge, and it did so by taking the meme a step further than anyone expected at the time. On the leadup to the console’s launch, Microsoft created a literal Xbox Series X fridge and gave them away. The limited edition Xbox appliances measure more than six feet tall and weigh over 400 pounds. The “disk drive” acts as the door handle, and they even play the Xbox Series X/S boot-up sound when opened.
Dirt 5 is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
