The last February 27 it was 25 years since the launch of Pokémon in Japan. By the same coincidence, year after year Pokémon Day is celebrated on that date, but this year was special for having reached the quarter of a century and the entire community was aware of the franchise.
One day before The Pokémon Company took the opportunity to reveal the immediate future of the video game saga with the announcements of the Sinnoh remakes – with a style very different from what we are used to and much more similar to the original – and a new approach to Pokémon with an open world game that seems to be loaded with much more lore.
On Saturday, however, It was time to look back and from Movistar eSports we wanted to pay tribute to 25 years of Pokémon with a special live program in which we have guests from all aspects of the community and we review the franchise with very different approaches.
We start with a review of the launch of the game itself and the first generation by Ana Márquez, one of the Spanish journalists who had the opportunity to analyze the games at the time, and from Rumiin, a prominent Pokémon streamer and a fan of the saga since its inception. We also put both their memory to the test by trying to list the original 151 Pokémon.
The second block dealt with the evolution of Pokémon designs. The community of the saga is very rich and goes far beyond those who are directly dedicated to it, so we had as a guest Máximo Cuevas, a streamer more specialized in FIFA but who recognized that he would not mind switching to Pokémon if his audience followed him. We also played with him and asked him to help us catalog the ugliest Pokémon.
A quarter of a century has served to generate many theories and legends about Pokémon and to talk about it we invited an expert like Karimero, a youtuber highly appreciated in the community. He told us about the importance of legends to the success of Pokémon, and we even put his knowledge of crazy fan theories to the test.
Israel Mallén, a journalist very fond of Pokémon, was our next guest to review everything the franchise covers. Games and the immediate future once again had their space, but it was the moment in which other expressions such as anime series and films or manga took center stage, in addition to the wide variety of existing merchandising.
The penultimate block was dedicated to the community and for this we had Mery Soldier and Bl3ssur, two well-known streamers – the first in a wide variety of games and the second more linked to Pokémon. Showing off great chemistry, they left us a very fun time in which they reviewed their feelings about the Pokémon community and left us curious anecdotes.
But Pokémon cannot be explained without the fighting and, of course, We couldn’t say goodbye without talking about the competitive one. For this we invite KatyTP and PokéAlex, two professional players who not only told us about their experience, but also participated in a fun challenge: a live match with the rules of the first generation. An unbeatable way to close our particular tribute to these 25 years.
