Three new sports to feature at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games are already underway, with the full list of sports now released.

BMX, golf and coastal rowing will all debut, with shooting making its return to the Games.

These new events have been added to the existing core list, meaning there are 20 sports and 26 disciplines confirmed for Victoria 2026.

Notably, T20 cricket will feature again, but it remains a women-only event.

The 2026 Games will be held in regional Victoria, with hubs located in Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Gippsland.

It is the first time the Commonwealth Games has been awarded to a state or region in its 92-year history, with a specific city usually taking up hosting duties.

Victoria 2026 event organisers have been given more scope than previous Games to select extra sports to run alongside core events.

Whilst BMX is already part of the Olympic Games, it has never featured at the Commonwealth Games.

Shepparton will host the BMX events alongside the men’s and women’s cycling time trials.

Golf is much the same, with the popular sport returning to the Olympics in 2016, and now set to debut in Victoria in 2026.

Cameron Smith and Minjee Lee headlined Australia’s representatives in Tokyo in 2021.

Coastal rowing is arguably the most unique of the latest additions, bringing a surf lifesaving spin to the Games.

The sport will require athletes to compete in open water, with currents and waves sure to make for a challenging event.
