MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women’s basketball team (3-1) will spend the next week on the road as they take on the Flames of Liberty University on Tuesday night before jetting off to the west coast to play in the Loyola Marymount University Thanksgiving Classic where they will face-off against LMU and Penn.
The Tigers are coming off a dominating 75-46 win over Florida A&M that saw the team score 51 points in the opening half while being led in scoring by Coriah Beck and Alana Davis.
After outscoring the Rattlers 25-8 in the first quarter, Memphis would hold FAMU to just 26% shooting in the second quarter to gain a 51-19 lead going into the second half. The Tigers would cruise from there to their third consecutive home win this season. This is the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Tigers have opened a season with three straight wins in Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
To kick-off their week-long trip, the Tigers will open on Tuesday night in Lynchburg, Va. against the Flames of Liberty (3-0).
The Flames are coming off a nail-biting overtime win against James Madison to remain undefeated this season. With a seven-point lead heading into the final two minutes of regulation, Liberty watched their lead disappear as JMU made a late offensive push to force overtime. Ten made free throws from the Flames in OT would help them to secure the 66-61 win.
For the season, Mya Berkman leads the charge for Liberty with 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
Last season when Memphis and Liberty met, the Tigers offense came in clutch down the stretch as back-to-back three-pointers from Madison Griggs and Aerial Wilson and late free throws secured the 72-67 win.
Memphis will end their week-long trip in Los Angeles, Calif. when they take on Loyola Marymount and Penn on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
LMU (1-2) is coming off their first win of the season after taking down Utah State. The Lions 15-point halftime lead slowly got smaller as the Aggies chipped away in the third and fourth quarters, but free throws made in the final minutes of the game gave LMU the 69-66 win.
For the season, Ariel Johnson leads the way with 13.7 points per game while Khari Clark and Nicole Rodriguez are adding in 12.0 and 10.3 points per game. Johnson and Jasmine Jones have been dominant on the boards for the Lions this season, combining for almost half of the teams rebounds through three games.
Penn (3-0) has collected wins over Hartford, King’s University and St. Francis Brooklyn to open the season. The Quakers took the lead in the first quarter with a 9-0 run that would hold for the remainder of the game as they coasted to a 63-46 win.
Five different Quaker players are averaging double-digits through their first three games; Kayla Padilla leads the way with 22.5 while Mandy McGurk, Jordan Obi, Mia Lakstigala and Nikola Kovacikova are all chipping in 12.0+ points per game.
Penn will play Villanova and UC San Diego before facing off against the Tigers.
