Respawn has announced that sales of the first Titanfall video game would be discontinued immediately. EA Play and other video game subscription providers are also removing the title.
While this is sure to be disappointing for Titanfall enthusiasts, it will have no effect on anyone who already owns the game, whether digitally or on disc. The game’s servers will stay operational for the time being.
“Titanfall is in our DNA at Respawn,” reads a message released today on the official Respawn Twitter account. “When it was first launched more than 7 years ago, it was a game that displayed the studio’s goals, and it continues to be a beacon of innovation that we strive for in all of our games.”
Titanfall initially launched on Microsoft’s Xbox One console and Windows PC back in March 2014 before arriving on the Xbox 360 the following month. Titanfall 2 arrived two years later on the Xbox One, Windows PC, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 console.
Titanfall’s sequel, Titanfall 2, and the mega-popular in-universe spin-off, Apex Legends, will remain unaffected by the discontinuation of their predecessor. The announcement also hints at future games set within the Titanfall universe with mentions of Titanfall being “core to Respawn’s DNA” and a promise that the Titanfall “franchise is a north star for the caliber of experiences we will continue to create here at Respawn.” This is likely a reference to the recently leaked Titanfall 3.
A mobile game spin-off, Titanfall: Assault, launched on both iOS and Android devices in August 2017 though it was shut down almost a year later.
Alongside the physical copies being discontinued as of today, Titanfall will no longer be available from subscription services from March 1, 2022. Though the game is over seven years old, this news has come as somewhat of a shock to Titanfall fans, who were worried whether Respawn cares for Titanfall after the success of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Some on Twitter have criticized Respawn for its decision, with one user throwing the developer’s words back at it by saying “‘Titanfall is the core of our DNA’ Which is exactly why you’re removing it right?”
The first-person hero-shooter spin-off, Apex Legends, launched on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC in 2019 and has been a huge success ever since. The game finally came to the Nintendo Switch this year and is expected to get a planned mobile port in 2022.
Recently, concerns were shared once again over the Titanfall franchise as some believed Titanfall 2 was seeing issues that would leave the PCs and consoles of players compromised. On the other hand, Titanfall has always been a series with a devout and dedicated fanbase, there are players who care about what Respawn has labelled the “core of DNA.” At the very least, the original Titanfall servers will still be up and running for those who already own the game.
