17:15 CEST: The highlights from day eight of the Olympics
That’s all for today’s live blog, as 21 gold medals were won at the Olympic Games this Saturday. The biggest win of the day was in the women’s 100m as Jamaica swept the podium, with Elaine Thompson-Herah taking gold. In the Olympics medal table, China stay top on 21 golds.
17:00 CEST: Historic moment for Qatar
Qatar have secured their first-ever Olympic gold after Fares Elbakh won in the 96kg men’s weightlifting final.
15:39 CEST: USA beat the Czech Republic!
Jayson Tatum and Kevin Durant combined for 50 points as the USA beat the Czech Republic 119-84. Read the match report HERE.
15:33 CEST: Bench players on for the USA
The likes of Jerami Grant, Zach LaVine, Keldon Johnson and JaVale McGee have been given the chance to get some game time, with the score 105-76 in favour of the USA.
15:26 CEST: USA up to 100 points
You might have thought they wouldn’t get to this figure after the first quarter, but Tatum’s three-pointer means the USA are up to 100 points with 4:49 left.
15:23 CEST: USA coasting to victory
Jayson Tatum is not up to 15 points for the game as he gives the USA a 91-64 lead over the Czech Republic, with seven minutes remaining in the final quarter.
15:15 CEST: Final nail in the coffin?
With the time expiring in the third quarter, Kevin Durant hit another three-pointer to give the USA an 82-60 lead after 30 minutes of basketball. The USA won that quarter 35-17.
15:11 CEST: USA’s depth becoming a factor
Devin Booker has just drained both of his free throws to make the score 75-60 in favour of the USA with 1:33 to go in the thirdquarter, and it’s becoming increasingly notable how the Czechs are becoming tired. Meanwhile, the USA are able to bring on NBA All-Stars off the bench.
15:03 CEST: Middleton drains a three
Khris Middleton nails a three-pointer with 5:05 to go in the third to extend the USA’s lead to 60-49, which is their biggest advantage so far.
15:00 CEST: Czechs have no answer on defensive end
The USA are having a lot of joy on the offensive end, with Jrue Holiday the latest to score as his floater makes it 55-47 to give Gregg Popovich’s side an eight-point lead with 6:24 to go in the third quarter.
14:53 CEST: We’re back underway here in Saitama
There’s another 20 minutes of basketball to be played. The United States are on course to book their place in the last four, but the Czech Republic will no doubt try and make it difficult for them.
14:38: USA lead at half time
The USA thought they were going to go into the break with a seven-point lead after Kevin Durant hit a two-point jumper, but the Czech Republic’s Blake Schilb made a fairly deep three-pointer with seconds remaining to ensure the USA’s advantage is only four points. At half time, it is 47-43 in favour of the USA.
14:35 CEST: USA beginning to flex their muscle
The USA are struggling to deal with EuroLeague star Jan Vesely, but on offense they are having more and more joy, with Jayson Tatum the latest to find his groove. The USA currently lead 45-39 with 2:00 to go in the second quarter.
14:28 CEST: Durant gives USA the lead
With 6:10 to go in the second quarter Kevin Durant scored a three-pointer to give the USA the lead, with the score 34-33. That was followed by a stop on the defensive end, and then Durant came up the floor and hit another three to open up a four-point advantage. Durant now has 11 points.
14:20 CEST: Czech Republic lead after first quarter
Following the first 10 minutes of action, Czech Republic lead 25-18 against the United States. Gregg Popovich is not happy with the USA players.
14:15 CEST: USA cut deficit
The Czech Republic now lead 21-18 with 2:10 left in the first quarter after the USA have been able to cut the deficit. Blake Schilb is shining for the Czechs with 11 points, as he has made four of his five attempts from the floor.
14:05 CEST: Czech Republic off to a quick start
The Czech Republic already have a lead of 9-2 over the USA, as they have overwhelmed Kevin Durant and co with their energy.
14:00 CEST: USA vs Czech Republic tips off
France are guaranteed to top Group A in the basketball, so the winner of USA vs Czech Republic will secure second spot and book their place in the semi-finals.
13:55 CEST: The last 100m men’s heat
Australia’s Rohan Browning has just run of personal best of 10.01 in the penultimate heat – the seventh – to secure first place. Jamaica’s Yohan Blake qualifies in second with 10.06, while Great Britain’s Chijindu Ujah runs 10.08 in third.
13:45 CEST: The 100m men’s heats continue
There is another South African that has qualified for the men’s 100m race, as Akani Simbine ran a time of 10.08. Ivory Coast’s Arthur Cisse comes second with 10.15, with Brazil’s Paulo Andre Camilo also getting a spot with 10.17.
13:35 CEST: More 100m men’s heats
Canada’s Andre de Grasse wins heat five with a time of 9.91, which is quicker than the USA’s Fred Kerley (9.97) and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omurwa (10.1). For what it’s worth, that’s a national record for Kenya.
13:25 CEST: The third and fourth men’s 100m heats
Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the third 100m heat with a time of 9.94, which is a new Italian record. Jamaican youngster Oblique Seville came in second with a personal best of 10.04, with South Africa’s Shaun Maswanganganyi finishing third with a time of 10.12.
The fourth heat saw a noticeable drop-off in terms of time, with South Africa’s Gift Leotela winning with a time of 10.04. China’s Bingtian Su finished second with 10.05, and third place went to St Kitts and Nevis’ Jason Rogers.
13:10 CEST: How the men’s 100m heats are shaping up
The USA’s Ronnie Baker won the first heat with a time of 10.03 seconds, followed by France’s Jimmy Vicaut in second and Nigeria’s Usheoritse Itsekiri in third. They qualify automatically.
Another Nigerian in Enoch Adegoke gets through to win the second heat with a personal best time of 9.98. There is surprise because USA star Trayvon Bromell has come in fourth after running a time of 10.5, with Qatar’s Femi Ogunde and Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes finishing ahead of him.
13:00 CEST: Spain into football semi-finals
Spain scored a last-gasp equaliser against Ivory Coast to send their quarter-final tie to extra time, where La Roja went to score a further three goals en route to a 5-2 victory. Rafa Mir, who came on 58 seconds before his last-minute equaliser, netted another two in extra time. Read the match report HERE.

11:45 CEST: Bronze medal for Barty and Peers
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic has pulled out of mixed doubles bronze match with compatriot Nina Stojanovic later today after his long singles bout. As such, the bronze medal in the mixed doubles goes to Australia’s Ash Barty and John Peers.
11:00 CEST: Djokovic loses to Carreno
Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta has beaten Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to secure the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Djokovic goes home empty handed.
10:00 CEST: Dressel’s Games
Caeleb Dressel has followed in the footsteps of Mark Spitz by becoming the only man to claim the 100 freestyle/100 butterfly double at the same Olympic Games. The American’s win in the 100m freestyle was his fifth career gold, and he set a new world record at 49.45.
09:00 CEST: Some positive news coming out of Tokyo
American BMX racer Connor Fields is out of intensive care after his heavy crash on Friday saw him suffer a brain haemorrhage.
