Despite it being teased, Twilight Princess, a fan-favorite classic Zelda game, still hasn’t come to the Switch. Here’s why it deserves to.
The Nintendo Direct on September 13, brought one huge announcement that fans of The Legend of Zelda have been waiting for: the name and release date for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to the hugely popular Breath of the Wild. However, while it was teased that the Nintendo Direct would also announce a Switch port release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, fans of the game were let down.
Twilight Princess, released in 2006, is currently only available on GameCube and Wii consoles, making it inaccessible to the new generation of Zelda players who have fallen in love with Breath of the Wild but are already invested in Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. While it is not off the table for Twilight Princess to be released later, or even on the next version of the Switch, fans are disappointed that Nintendo has not already taken the opportunity. A remastered port release of Twilight Princess could have bridged the gap between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, continuing to boost the franchise’s overall popularity.
The Story of Twilight Princess
Twilight Princess takes place years after the events of Ocarina of Time and follows Link, who is working in a farming village. And while things have been peaceful, the land of Hyrule is suddenly overtaken by Twilight when Zant usurps Princess Zelda, who surrenders to protect her people. When Link is pulled into the Twilight realm and transformed into a wolf, he must partner up with the mysterious Midna to bring light back to Hyrule and rescue those he cares about.
While Breath of the Wild is well-loved by fans, there are some who think that its overall story and mechanics are lacking in comparison to Twilight Princess. On this subject, Reddit user u/Thelostsoulinkorea said that “[Breath of the Wild] is good, but something is missing. Probably the dungeons. The world is too open and doesn’t have enough creatures to make it great . . . and [the] lack of unique items means I don’t want to waste time exploring and get nothing for it.” U/SpecialKannon agreed, emphasizing that “the lack of dungeons” in Breath of the Wild takes away from the game. In comparison, Twilight Princess provides a multitude of unique dungeons with difficult problem-solving elements and bosses and creatures that are unlike others seen in the franchise.
Why Fans Want Twilight Princess
Fans of Twilight Princess claim that the game “follows more of the traditional elements of the Zelda series” (according to u/UnfairPerformer1243). It feels more like a The Legend of Zelda game than Breath of the Wild does. The game has a wholly unique atmosphere to it and feels whimsical yet dark. Additionally, Twilight Princess offers four equipped weapons at a time, while Breath of the Wild does not, and it introduces Wolf Link, creating more options in combat than the modern games do. And while Breath of the Wild‘s open-world format offers more room for free exploration, some fans have voiced their disappointment, saying it doesn’t offer enough variety in monsters and dungeons to justify the extra exploration.
Twilight Princess also features a unique story and stunning visuals despite the game being almost 20 years old. The graphics still hold up today, but they could always be remastered when the game is eventually brought to the Switch or Switch 2. And if Twilight Princess were to be brought to Switch soon, it would help to bridge the gap between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, satisfying long-time fans and introducing the newer generation to the masterpiece that is Twilight Princess.
