Unpacking Dev Diary details game’s origins and appeal

Last summer I was introduced to Unpacking from indie dev Witch Beam, a contemplative and calming game about just that — unpacking. You take the role of an unseen “Unpacking Ghost,” as called by Creative Director Wren Brier, and you sort your way through post-move boxes at various stages of a character’s life. It’s through their objects that you learn about them and their life, revealed in small steps and then organized per your inference.

It’s a charming affair, both visually and conceptually, and a game that I was instantly intrigued by. While the wait for it is still a bit longer, a new Dev Diary from Witch Beam has been released that details not only the game’s origins, but also offers some insight into both its creative process and what the team has seen unfold as people discover their work.

Get ready to settle in with Unpacking when it launches on Nintendo Switch, as well as PC and Xbox, on November 2nd.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
