West Salem High School’s esports team grows in popularity, gets state recognition

WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) – It’s not new, but it’s growing in popularity.

West Salem High School has an esports team, which is competitive video gaming.

The school started up the team last year and they’re already Division III state champs.

There is a lot of student interest too, with 25 members between the varsity and junior varsity teams.

It may not seem like a sport, but the teamwork and competitiveness involved say otherwise.

“The thing that maybe gets lost a little bit with esports is it’s not just people playing video games. It really is a competitive strategy where kids need to communicate and work together to achieve those goals,” said Jason Holter, business & marketing teacher.

The team has even gotten recognition from Wisconsin colleges.

On Thursday students from UW-Stout met up with the class virtually to talk about college programs and competitive gaming opportunities after high school.
