PS5 fans have been patiently waiting as Sony works through the beta test of its upcoming firmware update that is going to unlock the ability to upgrade the storage with certain compatible M.2 NVMe SSD models. We already know that Seagate has a qualified model they have been testing for the new firmware. Now, Western Digital (WD) is next up to confirm similar successes with its SN850 series.
The SN850 series features incredibly fast drives available as 500GB (currently $118), 1TB (currently $199), and 2TB (currently $394) options (prices based on the time of this article and without heatsink). They aren’t the “fastest” PCIe Gen4 drives out there, but they are a tad more affordable than some of the other options.
We recently reviewed the 500GB model with great results earlier in the year. It should make for a great addition to any PS5 console. However, you will still have to wait until the firmware is made available–which should be happening sometime next month.
Currently, Western Digital is still “testing” things with the new console to make sure there aren’t any surprises. There is a number of factors that come into play, such as performance and the physical size available inside the console for adding a new drive. Thankfully, WD seems pretty confident (and you have the Seagate option as well) and it shouldn’t be long before the firmware is made available and you can take to upgrading things yourself.
