After many years, the long-awaited Biomutant finally released this week. The action role-playing game from Experiment 101 and THQ Nordic is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC as of May 25, 2021.
And even though backwards compatibility allows for it to be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, there’s still a desire for a native next-gen version of the game.
THQ Nordic has already confirmed we’ll be getting a native version of Biomutant for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S but hasn’t really provided a firm window. On the publisher’s FAQ page, they only say it will come “sometime in the near-ish future.”
This could mean as early as sometime this year, or perhaps 2022. It’s such a relative term.
THQ Nordic recently released footage fo Biomutant that was captured on a retail PS5. In the video, the option for native 4K on PlayStation was deactivated due to “stability- and performance-related reasons.”
Upon release, Biomutant currently runs at 1080p at 60fps and is upscaled to 4K at 60fps. It’s disappointing that the game doesn’t run at native 4K, but also understandable since it’s not a native PS5 game. That being said, it does run at native 4K at 60fps on the Xbox Series X right now.
Hopefully, we’ll get some parity between the consoles when the native next-gen versions officially arrives. For what it’s worth, I’m currently playing Biomutant on PlayStation 5 right now and I think it looks and plays wonderfully. But I’m also not a stickler for the whole 1080p versus 4K argument. The game is fun and plays well on PS5 and that’s enough for me right now.

There’s also a question about the game’s release on Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and other platforms, but don’t expect any solid answers. “Only time will tell,” THQ Nordic offers.
Biomutant is out now and playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
