Earlier this week, Deep Silver Voliton issued a lengthy update about long-term plans to improve the state of Saints Row, which received mostly average-ish reviews when it launched a few months ago. We called the game “poor” in our 4/10 review, stating that it was a “truly disappointing return for the Saints“.
However, as we’ve seen in the past, there are plenty of games that have enjoyed amazing comeback stories even after a below-par launch. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is an obvious one, with its multiplayer suffering major technical issues at release, but its fortunes have been turned around completely by 343 Industries over the years.
Here’s what Frank O’Connor of 343 had to say about the situation a while later:
“Every angry mail I received, I took to heart. I felt like I had personally let our fans down. I have not spent a single day since the night the game fell down in matchmaking where I didn’t think about it.”
Another famous example is Star Wars Battlefront 2, which suffered such an angry reception to its microtransactions at launch that DICE and EA were forced to rebuild the way multiple in-game systems worked, and then to their credit, they continued to provide a massive amount of free content over the next few years.
And those are just a couple of examples. There are plenty of games that struggled massively at launch (Cyberpunk 2077, anyone?) but have since at least become playable, if not transformed into a significantly improved experience.
So, we want to hear from you! What examples can you provide? Let us know down in the comments below.
