Heading into Microsoft’s E3 press conference, one of the biggest questions was what would be made of the company’s recent acquisition of Bethesda? More specifically, would Bethesda’s major titles — Starfield, The Elder Scrolls VI (and eventually Fallout) — be exclusive to Xbox? Or would the developer maintain its multiplatform release formats?
Now it’s worth mentioning that neither Microsoft nor Bethesda have outright stated that The Elder Scrolls VI will be an Xbox exclusive. And many PlayStation gamers are clinging to comments that Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard made to The Telegraph recently:
Well, we may have gotten our answer. Starfield was confirmed as an Xbox console exclusive (it’s also coming to PC). And this probably signifies that future Bethesda titles will also be Xbox exclusive. Yes, that means The Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced at the same time as Starfield, will almost certainly be an Xbox exclusive.
It sounds like Howard was about to say they are still discussing the possibility of a multiplatform release but let’s be honest, Microsoft would be insane to let The Elder Scrolls VI release on any sort of competitor’s platform. There’s a reason they paid upwards of $7 billion for the studio.
The Elder Scrolls VI almost certainly won’t release on PlayStation 5. But being an “Xbox exclusive” doesn’t mean you’ll need an Xbox Series X|S to play it. If you’ve got a decent computer, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on PC might be your ticket to playing The Elder Scrolls VI. Or maybe xCloud. The point is, there are enough options out there and even die hard PS5 gamers likely have more than their console as a gaming option.
In all likelihood, any chance for “everybody to have the ability to play” The Elder Scrolls VI will likely come in the form of Xbox Game Pass and xCloud, Microsoft’s cloud gaming service that allows you to play Xbox games across a plethora of devices such as PC and Android mobile phone or tablet.
