An Xbox fan faithfully recreates the nostalgic original Xbox 360 ‘Blades’ dashboard as a background for the Xbox Series X/S.
Many are desperate to recapture the Xbox 360 gaming days of the past. While Xbox Series X backward compatibility is helping to make that dream reality, one Reddit user has taken it a step further and recreated one of the more nostalgic original hallmarks of the Xbox 360.
On the Xbox Series X subreddit, user u/prasad1287 posted his faithful recreations of the old Xbox 360 “blades” interface. For those unaware, when the Xbox 360 originally launched back in 2005, its original dashboard had a design known as “blades,” where each section of the console was split into menus with silver blades on either side, which made a satisfying “woosh” sound when they are flipped through.
Now, while u/prasad1287’s recreation doesn’t feature separate menus or makes the iconic sound, its design calls back to a much simpler time in gaming’s past where Xbox 360 gamers merely had to worry about what games they were playing and what games their friends were playing. Much of the nostalgia for the original blades interface comes from the fact that, not only was it the first, but it was also the most simple and easy to use. As the years went on, more kept being added to the dashboard until it was simply too overwhelming for a lot of people. But now, thanks to Xbox Series X’s dashboard being customizable, Xbox gamers can recreate that simple feeling by using u/prasad1287’s blades recreation.
The timing of this post could not be more perfect either since, in November of last year, Xbox announced that they would no longer be adding any more classic games to its already massive library of backward compatibility, instead opting to support the current ones with FPS boost updates and occasional fixes. Now, with the vast majority of Original Xbox and Xbox 360’s most popular games available on the Xbox Series X, looking better and running faster than ever before, u/prasad1287’s blades recreation can be used to turn a new Xbox Series X console into the ultimate emulation machine.
For those looking to recapture their gaming past and make their Xbox Series X dashboard their own, u/prasad1287 has kindly posted a number of color variations for his design in the original thread, along with other users on there who have provided links to guides on how to put it all together and get it looking how it should. With how user-friendly Xbox has been in recent memory, with Game Pass being a clear example, it would not be a surprise if they somehow find a way to bring the blades back and show fans just how far they’ve come from the Xbox 360.
