A new release date announcement confirms the addition of a day one Xbox Game Pass game that’s coming to the service on October 20.
Devolver Digital has confirmed Phantom Abyss for an October 20 release on Xbox Series X, making it a new day one Xbox Game Pass game for later this month. New Xbox Game Pass games are typically confirmed at the beginning and middle of each month in a roundup post by Microsoft, but release date announcements from other companies whose games are coming to Game Pass sometime let the cat out of the bag early.
Phantom Abyss, for the uninitiated, is an asynchronous multiplayer game where players have to avoid traps and loot treasure from dangerous temples. It’s a fast-paced platformer where players can see the ghosts of other people playing the game and watch how they tackle each challenge they come across in any given temple. Phantom Abyss has been available on PC in early access for a while now, but it’s making the jump to consoles with the Xbox Series X version on October 20.
What makes Phantom Abyss an especially exciting new addition to the Xbox Game Pass lineup is the fact that it has earned “Very Positive” reviews on Steam in its early access period. There have been 1,671 Steam reviews posted for Phantom Abyss at the time of this writing, which makes its overall Very Positive rating that much more impressive.
Phantom Abyss isn’t the only new day one game that will be added to the Xbox Game Pass lineup in the second half of October 2022. Another day one release coming later this month is A Plague Tale: Requiem, the sequel to the well-received A Plague Tale: Innocence, which is set to join Game Pass as a Series X-only release, just like Phantom Abyss. Interestingly, there’s yet another Series X-only game that’s set to join Game Pass this month alongside Phantom Abyss and A Plague Tale: Requiem.
Another Series X-only game joining the Xbox Game Pass lineup in October 2022 is coming a bit earlier than those games in the form of Scorn, set to join the service on October 14. Scorn is a first-person horror game that places major emphasis on body horror, and it should make for a fittingly disturbing game for Game Pass subscribers to try this Halloween season.
But while there are plenty of new games coming to Xbox Game Pass in October 2022, there are also games that are being removed as well. Six games are leaving Xbox Game Pass on October 15, and it’s likely that another batch of departures will be announced for October 31, so fans should keep that in mind.
