Microsoft’s decision to release Xbox Game Studios games on Steam is turning out
to be one of the best moves they’ve made over the last couple of years.
Xbox have had some pretty massive releases this year with Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite leading the way. As you may know, Microsoft are releasing all their first-party games on PC for quite a while now and more recently, they’ve started launching on Steam, instead of keeping their games exclusive to Microsoft Store.
And it was one of the best decisions they’ve could have made. The majority of Xbox games on Steam are quite popular among the players especially live-service titles like Sea of Thieves. The recently released Halo Infinite also has a healthy player base of around 60k daily users while Forza Horizon 5 was another big hit.
In their
annual Best of Steam report
, Steam reveals that three Xbox published games are in the Top 12 new releases measured by gross revenue. These three titles are Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite.
Best new releases on Steam in terms of revenue
- Outriders
- Naraka Bladepoint
- Halo Infinite
- Valheim
- Forza Horizon 5
- New World
- Age of Empires IV
- Battlefield 2042
- Back 4 Blood
- Mass Effect LE
- Resident Evil Village
- Farming Sim 22
Of course, we don’t have the exact numbers since Steam did not share the detailed data but it’s safe to assume that Xbox earned a pretty big chunk of money from Steam.
Xbox’s future games are also expected to launch on Steam in addition to Microsoft Store and Xbox app. One of the advantages that the Xbox app on PC currently has is the PC Game Pass subscription service, which is not available on Steam, sadly.
Implementing PC Game Pass to Steam might sound like a good idea after the initial success of Xbox games on Steam but it remains to be seen whether there’s any initiative at Microsoft and Valve to do such a deal.
