What about the PlayStation 5?
Much like Microsoft with the launch of its next-gen console, Sony experienced issues when it released the PlayStation 5. There were issues with supply problems and a global shortage of semiconductors, making the PS5 just as hard to find as the Xbox series X.
If you’re unsure on which device is the one for you, The Independent’s technology editor Andrew Griffin put the two devices head to head to find out which is better. Read his full review:

‘Halo Infinite’ preview for Xbox Series X and Xbox One
The hotly anticipated sci-fi shooter game, Halo Infinite, was scheduled to be released at the end of last year on the next-generation Xbox Series X console, as its flagship first-party launch game. But, was delayed due to “multiple factors that have contributed to development challenges, including the ongoing Covid-related impacts affecting us all this year”, said the game’s developers.
But, yesterday developers 343 Industries started its tech preview, allowing invited users to play and stream the game until Monday 2 August. Although, gamers reported technical problems, including a blue screen display:
That aside, it’s set to have some really high-level gameplay and there’s even a new weapon drop mechanic, a first for Halo.

Is the Xbox series X in stock at John Lewis?
The last restock at John Lewis was earlier in the month, so you’re not alone if you’re wondering when the next drop will be. The only intel we have at this stage is that the retailer only ever restocks at 7am.
Where can we look next? Well, we saw a small drop from Amazon yesterday, so we’re hoping that maybe Smyths Toys might be next. It’s one of three retailers – along with Game and 4Gadgets– partnering with Microsoft to offer the Xbox All Access programme, a pay-as-you-go alternative to buying the console at full price. You pay £28.99 per month for 24 months, get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate thrown in, and own the console at the end of the term.
But, alas, Smyths hasn’t had the console in stock since mid-June. When the Xbox is in stock, availability tends to be very local. Often your only option at checkout is a collection from a nearby store.

Xbox Series X vs Xbox One X
If you’re wondering whether it’s worth upgrading your Xbox one X to the new Xbox series X, it’s worth getting to grips with the differences in the consoles. Firstly, the new-gen device is capable of hitting higher framerates, which will almost entirely reduce load time. But that’s not all, it boasts better visuals, graphics and performance.
If you’re still on the fence about it, our writer was lucky enough to get his hands on the console, praising it in his review for being “a thunderously powerful next-generation console, just waiting to get started”.

Xbox game pass unlimited
(The Independent)
The Xbox Game Pass subscription service is widely billed as gaming’s answer to Netflix, it offers players a library of more than 100 games, which subscribers are free to download and play at their leisure.
Is it worth the money? Our explainer on this will provide a much lengthier answer but in short, it’s a pretty definitive “yes”. When you consider the high (and incrementally rising) price of new blockbuster game releases – now as high as £69.99 for some of the biggest games – the chance for hundreds of games at a fraction of the cost seems like a no-brainer.

Xbox stock trackers, signing off
Thank you for joining us today! As UK retailers close their shutters, we’re downing our Xbox series X stock checking tools for the rest of the evening.
Today brought us a riveting Xbox restock by The Game Collection, which had the lifespan of a mayfly but lit a fire in our hearts.
It follows a restock earlier this week by Box, as well as a smattering of consoles from Very and Argos. While the frequency of new stock is slowly increasing, supply of Microsoft’s next-generation console is still down to a trickle. We’re still awaiting the kind of hefty, chonky restocks we were seeing earlier in the year.
What’s next? Well we think John Lewis could restock at 7am, so keep an eye on them tomorrow morning. Then tune back into our Xbox series X stock tracking blog for updates throughout the day.

The Xbox series S is now available as a suitcase
(Microsoft/July)
Rather than sitting around waiting for more Xbox stock to show up, why not book your first post-pandemic holiday? You’ll need a new suitcase of course.
Luckily for you, Microsoft has collaborated with luggage company July to create an Xbox series S themed carry-on case, which also doubles as a travel case for your Xbox series S.
The case comes with a built-in TV, so you can play Flight Simulator (£59.99, Very.co.uk) while waiting in the departure lounge.
