Xbox series X stock – live: Latest UK restock news from Very, Argos, Smyths and more

Microsoft’s great showing at Gamescom 2021

As we enter October and approach the one-year anniversary of the console’s launch, the Xbox series X is still impossible to find in stock online. Bottlenecks in the manufacturing process and a global shortage of component parts have brought production of Microsoft’s next-generation console to a near standstill, leaving shoppers in the UK wondering where to buy the Xbox series X.

While it’s easier to find the cheaper and less advanced Xbox series S in stock, the more powerful Xbox series X sells out almost as quickly as new stock appears. Knowing when and where the Xbox will be restocked next is key to grabbing one before everybody else does.

So, if you’re wondering where you can buy an Xbox series X in the UK today, or when the Xbox will be back in stock, our stock tracking liveblog is here to help. We’ll alert you to the latest stock drops as soon as they happen, as well as any news on predicted restock dates, new games and accessories, and milestone events.

Very could restock the Xbox series X next week

Very is predicted to restock the Xbox series X next week, between 5-7 October and between 9am and 11am. That’s according to twitter user @StockCheckerUK.

Very last had the Xbox in stock in mid-September, when it sold Microsoft’s console at the same time as the equally elusive PlayStation 5. We’re sure their server team was absolutely thrilled with all that traffic.

When is Xbox All Access coming back?

When available, Game and Smyths Toys are the only two retailers where you can buy an Xbox series X through the Xbox All Access programme, the pay-monthly alternative to paying full price for the console. You pay £28.99 per month over two years rather than £449 up front and get two years of Game Pass Ultimate thrown in, which actually makes it slightly cheaper than buying both separately.

Availability of Xbox All Access is dependent on the console being in stock at either store, so right now neither retailer is taking new orders for the scheme. And because both retailers hold consoles aside to sell through this scheme, throughout September Xbox All Access has been the most reliable way to get your hands on an Xbox.

Right now? Game and Smyths Toys are sold out, but they both restocked the scheme last Friday and could do so again today.

October predictions

Which retailer will be the first to sell an Xbox series X in October? And who might restock today of all days?

Let’s rattle through some likely candidates while we digest our cornflakes.

First up there’s Currys PC World, which we believe has the best chance of restocking Microsoft’s next-generation console next. It’s almost been an entire month since Currys last had the Xbox in stock, which is the longest the retailer has ever gone without a drop.

Currys tends to sell the Xbox series X console by itself, with no bundled accessories or games, for the plain old price of £449. When a drop happens, the main Currys site gets hammered with traffic, so we recommend using the app to complete your purchase.

Differences between the Xbox series X and series S

(Microsoft)

There are two next-gen Xboxes: the less powerful Xbox series S and the more advanced Xbox series X.

They both run the same next-gen games (as well as older Xbox games through backwards compatibility), but the cheaper Xbox series S has less processing power and half as much storage space. This means graphics won’t look as detailed and performance may be a little slower, and you’ll have to use an external hard drive or delete and redownload games to make space more often.

For that reason, the Xbox series X is considered to be the true next-generation console – but both consoles are excellent games machines. The Xbox series S has another big advantage in that it’s much easier to find in stock than the Xbox series X.

The Xbox series S costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk), which looks positively bargainous compared to the Xbox series X at £449.

The best VPN for Xbox series X

The Xbox series X has impeccable security when gaming online, but there are other reasons why you might want to install a VPN on an Xbox. Well, there’s one other reason, really: foreign telly.

If you use your Xbox to watch entertainment on the Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime apps, a VPN allows you to spoof your location and access content not normally available in your country. You can’t install a VPN directly to an Xbox, but you can install it on your router to cover all devices on your network.

To keep your Xbox series X at peak performance while using a VPN, you’ll want to make sure that the service you choose is fast and responsive enough to avoid lag and dropouts playing online. We’ve rounded up the best VPNs for torrenting, streaming and gaming.

Black Friday 2021 tech deals

As Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer himself confirmed, the Xbox series X isn’t going to be readily available in stock until 2022. The same supply problems are also having a knock on effect on other electronics and tech gadgets.

We’ll be adding new deals as they appear in the run up to the big shopping event, so check back for updates as Black Friday approaches.

Does Argos have stock or not?

Here’s twitter user @gotacommonname summing up many shoppers’ frustrations with a certain catalogue store.

The Xbox series X is currently sold out at Argos, though sometimes – if you’re very lucky – one will appear in a nearby branch like a unicorn.
