Update 3: Hurrah, the free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for Yakuza: Like a Dragon is finally working for digital buyers. Either find the game on the PlayStation Store or in your library, and you should see the option to upgrade for free on the right of the screen. After you’ve clicked that, just make sure to download the PS5 version and you’re good to go.
Update 2: RGG Studio — the developer behind the Yakuza series — has confirmed that it’s aware of the issue that’s preventing PS5 users from upgrading their digital copy of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. You can find the tweet below.
The company also thanks fans for their continued support. Hopefully this all gets sorted out sooner rather than later, although it does once again bring up the talking point of Sony’s current PlayStation Store being a bit of a mess.
We will, of course, keep you updated.
Update: According to Ask PlayStation UK on Twitter (PlayStation’s official support account, thanks @BuiltWithCoffee), “the relevant teams are aware of the issue and currently investigating.”
Let’s hope that this farce doesn’t roll on much longer. At the time of this update, the free upgrade for Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PS5 has been unavailable for almost 16 hours.
Original Story: Well this is a pain in the arse, isn’t it? Yakuza: Like a Dragon is out today on PlayStation 5, and it’s a free upgrade if you already own the game on PS4. Except at the time of writing, the upgrade process doesn’t actually work.
Usually, all you have to do is head to the game’s page (either on the PlayStation Store or in your library), and find the PS5 version. From there, you simply claim your free upgrade and that’s that. It could all be labelled a bit better, but personally speaking, we’ve had no problems with upgrades in the past.
Like a Dragon, however, prompts you to buy the current-gen edition should you attempt to claim it. It’s also worth noting that this only happens with the digital version of the game. If you have Like a Dragon on disc, you should be able to upgrade hassle-free.
So, someone’s cocked something up. It could just be that the free upgrade magically appears once the store is fully updated later today, but we’ll have to wait and see. We’ve reached out to Yakuza’s PR team for comment, but in the meantime, let us know if you’re having the same problem in the comments section below.
We’ll update this article as we learn more.
