Falcom President Hints at a New Kiseki Series Game in 2019; Ys IX Trailer Coming on March 24

Nihon Falcom’s president Toshihiro Kondo hinted at a possible new Kiseki series game coming for the series’ 15th anniversary in 2019.

Japanese news site Dengeki Online announced that the very first trailer for Nihon Falcom’s Ys IX; Monstrum Nox on PS4 will be revealed at the Dengeki Game Festival 2019 on March 24. Precisely, it’ll be shown during a stage event at 17:00 JST, with Falcom’s president Toshihiro Kondo. At the same event, Kondo will also speak of what comes next for the Kiseki series.

Meanwhile, it’s possible we’ve already got an appetizer on what Kondo will say at Dengeki Game Festival. In an interview with Gamer.ne, Kondo was asked about what will Falcom do next with the Kiseki series, now that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV The End of Saga has been released. In particular, he was asked about when the next Kiseki series game could be releasing:

I’m not sure. Now that the Trails of Cold Steel series ended, obviously we’re thinking about a sequel, but we both want the next series to be accessible for those who didn’t play Trails of Cold Steel, and for it to contain callback elements for those who did play it. Also, while Trails of Cold Steel ended with its 4th game, we still wanted to do some thing(s) with it a bit, so we’re thinking about what we could do on that front too.

In my opinion, some kind of “Gaiden” game for Trails of Cold Steel could be coming. Or maybe “Kai” enhanced ports for Trails of Cold Steel III and IV. Kondo continued:

We don’t want to focus too much on one of these fronts and neglect the others, and we’re trying to work on all fronts at the same time. There’s also how 2019 is the 15th anniversary of the Kiseki series, so It’d be nice to release a new game of the series this year as part of the festivities.

The first game of the Kiseki series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, first released in 2004 on PC in Japan. This means we might be getting some kind of 15th-anniversary game for the series.

Note: I don’t recommend clicking on the interview’s source links unless you have finished Trails of Cold Steel IV, as it’s an interview geared towards those who completed the game and is full of spoiler screenshots. You can find the original Gamer.ne interview here and here.

In any case, be sure to stay tuned for Dengeki Gamer Festival 2019 in March where we’ll definitely hear more about all this. I’m really looking forward to seeing Ys IX in action as well.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III will be coming west exclusively on PS4 in Fall 2019. Hopefully, Trails of Cold Steel IV will follow not too long after it.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was announced in December for PlayStation 4 and will be releasing in 2019. The game’s battles and environments have an emphasis on verticality and will feature new gameplay elements to the Ys series like wall-running. You can also read more details on the game’s setting, like the prison city of Balduk and the “Monstrum” characters shown in one of the key visuals. Even more details, a new screenshot, and a new piece of artwork can be found in our latest article on the game, covering an interview where Kondo said it’s fine for newcomers to start the Ys series with Ys IX Monstrum Nox.
